After nine months of research into the skills needed by remote team leaders and managers, the new TeamMate 360 Model has been published.
Core and Specific Skills
Anyone who has ever worked from home, in the field or in different offices to their manager knows how important it is for managers to communicate. The new TeamMate 360 Model defines exactly the six Core Skills needed by team leaders and managers who lead remote team members and teams. They are:
· Developing Team Plans
· Team Leadership
· Team Communication
· Working as a Team
· Performance Management
· Exploiting Technology
TeamMate 360 project coordinator John Moore said:
“Managing remote team members and virtual teams is not so different from conventional people management. Of course, distance can be a barrier, but today’s technology has to a large extent made this excuse redundant.
The main principles of management and leadership are the same for conventional management and remote or virtual management. I believe communication takes on a new level of significance as does the use of communications technology.”
This is reflected in the Core Skill, Exploiting Technology, which is made up of four Specific Skills: Using Technology, Facilitating Communication, Sharing Information and Enabling Collaboration. Today’s managers and team leaders need to know to use digital tools to support remote workers.
Mr Moore added:
“It is essential that remote workers feel a part of the team and the decision-making process. This is one of the main themes of the Remote Team Manager course that supports TeamMate 360.”
